French group Auchan is restructuring its Spanish subsidiary, closing 25 Alcampo supermarkets as “shoppers prefer smaller convenience stores”. 710 jobs would be at risk.
Falling sales
Alcampo is struggling with falling sales, as shoppers increasingly prefer to shop in smaller convenience stores, the retailer explained the “difficult but necessary” decision. The 25 shops were part of the 235 Dia supermarkets that Auchan acquired in 2022.
Alcampo’s comparable sales fell 2.9 % to 4.6 billion euros last year, LSA reports. The chain has a 3 % market share in Spain.
